Supporting an elderly parent, an aging senior in the family, can be a difficult task. There are plenty of family caregivers all across the country that sacrifice their time, energy, and even their health to make sure they are safe. However, many of these same individuals feel the most significant thing they do is clean up after this aging parent.
They do a lot more than that.
Just because a family caregiver may not have a lot of time to support this senior, that doesn’t mean cleaning is all they do. Sure, it may feel like a significant part of the job, but is it really the only thing?
Cleaning up the dishes, vacuuming, picking up laundry, etc.
For some, it’s like chasing around a young child, picking up after him or her every time they move from one room to the next. As we get older, it becomes easier to begin teaching them the value of picking up after themselves, but what about for a person in their 70s or 80s who has so many health issues and limited mobility that cleaning is simply a task they can’t do?
They may be more prudent about their own surroundings, making less of a mess than a three-year-old, but odds are there are going to be plenty of things that need to be picked up. Yes, cleaning the dishes might be something a family caregiver has to do. Yes, they might also need to assist with the laundry. Yes, the senior may need help vacuuming or mopping the floor every once in a while.
If it feels exhausting, stress is likely close behind.
Just because a caregiver is related to the senior doesn’t mean they won’t experience stress and anxiety. Caregiver stress can affect just about any person looking after an aging or adult individual. If a person feels like the only thing they do is clean, clean, clean, it’s time to look at other options because that’s a clear sign somebody is getting overwhelmed with the daily routine of supporting another.
Hiring a home care aide is one of the best options people can consider, regardless of circumstances when an aging parent, spouse, or even a sibling needs help on a daily or every other day basis. A home care aide is not a cleaning service, but can be hired to support a client with many of these same tasks and that allows the family member to feel like they are making more of an impact.
